Creating Space to Seek Christ First
Simplicity is the practice of removing what is unnecessary so that we can give greater attention to what is essential. It is not primarily about having less; it is about making room for more of Christ. In a world filled with noise, hurry, possessions, commitments, and endless distractions, simplicity helps us return to the center.
Jesus teaches in Matthew 6:33 (ESV), “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.” Simplicity is the intentional decision to order our lives around that priority. It asks us to examine what is competing for our attention, affection, and trust, and then to release what keeps us from wholehearted devotion to Christ.
This discipline forms contentment because it reminds us that Christ is enough. We often accumulate responsibilities, possessions, and distractions in an attempt to feel secure, significant, or satisfied. Yet true security is found in Christ alone. As we simplify, we create space to notice His presence, receive His gifts with gratitude, and live with greater freedom. Simplicity is not about deprivation; it is about clarity.
Guided Practice
Today, choose one area of your life to simplify.
Consider:
Your physical space
Your schedule
Your digital habits
Your commitments
Your mental clutter
Ask yourself:
What is consuming attention that belongs to Christ?
What could I release, postpone, remove, or simplify today?
Take one practical step:
Clear a space
Turn off notifications
Create margin in your schedule
Say no to something unnecessary
Replace distraction with a few moments of prayer or Scripture
Pray:
"Jesus, help me seek first Your kingdom. Show me what is crowding my heart and teach me to find my contentment in You."
Reflection Prompt
What did simplifying today reveal about the things competing for my attention, and how might Christ be inviting me into greater freedom and contentment?
