Abiding in the Word of Christ
Scripture meditation is the practice of slowing down and remaining with God’s Word long enough for it to shape the heart. In a world that encourages constant movement and endless consumption, meditation invites us to stay. Rather than rushing through a passage, we linger with it, allowing its truth to settle deeply within us.
The psalmist describes the blessed person as one whose “delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night” in Psalms 1:2 (ESV). Meditation is more than thinking about Scripture; it is delighting in it. It is returning to the same truth again and again until it begins to shape how we think, feel, and live.
Jesus tells His disciples in John 15:7 (ESV), “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you...” Scripture meditation is one way we practice that abiding. As we carry His words throughout the day, the Spirit uses them to remind us of what is true, strengthen our faith, and draw us into deeper communion with Christ. Over time, the truth we meditate on becomes the truth we live from.
Guided Practice
Today, choose one short passage of Scripture—one or two verses is enough.
Read the passage slowly several times
Pay attention to a word or phrase that stands out
Repeat that phrase quietly throughout the day
Ask:
What does this reveal about Christ?
What is God inviting me to trust, receive, or remember?
Return to the verse whenever you have a moment of waiting, walking, or reflection
Rather than moving quickly to another passage, allow this one to accompany you throughout the day.
Pray:
"Jesus, let Your Word dwell deeply within me. Help me remain in Your truth and become more aware of Your presence today."
Reflection Prompt
What truth from today's passage stayed with me most, and how did meditating on it shape my awareness of Christ throughout the day?
