Clearing Space to Treasure Christ Above All
Simplicity is the practice of intentionally ordering our lives around what matters most: communion with Christ. In a world filled with noise, excess, distraction, and hurry, simplicity helps us return to the “one thing necessary” Jesus speaks of in Luke 10:42 (ESV). It is not primarily about owning less, but about living undivided before God.
Jesus warns in Matthew 6:24 (ESV) that the heart cannot serve two masters. Simplicity exposes the competing allegiances that quietly shape our lives—approval, comfort, productivity, comparison, control—and invites us to release what keeps us spiritually crowded. As we let go of what is unnecessary, we create space to attend more fully to Christ.
This discipline forms contentment because it reminds us that Christ Himself is our sufficiency. We do not need to constantly consume, achieve, or accumulate in order to be secure. In Him, we already possess what is eternal. Simplicity trains the heart to rest in that reality and to live with greater freedom, clarity, and peace.
Guided Practice
Today, practice simplifying one area of your life.
Ask yourself:
What feels spiritually or emotionally crowded right now?
What is competing for my attention, affection, or peace?
Choose one practical step:
Clear a physical space
Reduce unnecessary input or screen time
Say no to something non-essential
Slow your pace instead of rushing through the day
As you simplify, pray:
“Jesus, help me treasure You above what distracts me from You.”
Use the space you create to become more aware of Christ’s presence.
Reflection Prompt
What did simplifying today reveal about what my heart has been clinging to—and how is Christ inviting me into greater freedom and contentment?
