Giving Christ Our Attention, Affection, and Allegiance
Worship begins with Jesus Christ, who is worthy of our attention not simply because of what He does for us, but because of who He is. He is the Son of God, the Savior of the world, the Lamb who was slain, and the risen King who reigns forever. In Colossians 1:15–17 (ESV), Christ is revealed as the One through whom all things were created and in whom all things hold together. Worship is the fitting response to His glory and goodness.
Worship is more than singing—it is the offering of the whole self to God. What we behold shapes what we love, and what we love shapes the direction of our lives. In Romans 12:1 (ESV), Paul urges believers to present their bodies as “a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” Worship forms us by turning our hearts away from lesser things and fixing them again on Christ.
Because of Jesus, worship is not an attempt to earn God’s favor or attention. Through His finished work, we have already been brought near. Worship becomes the joyful response of those who have encountered grace. As we adore Christ, the Spirit gently conforms us into His likeness, awakening deeper love, trust, and surrender.
Guided Practice
Today, intentionally set your attention on Christ.
Begin by reading a short passage that reveals who Jesus is
Listen to or sing a worship song slowly and attentively
Speak directly to Christ in prayer, praising Him for specific aspects of His character
Surrender your day, plans, and concerns to Him as an act of trust
If your mind becomes distracted, gently return your attention to Christ rather than striving for a perfect moment.
Let worship become affection, not just activity.
Reflection Prompt
What did I behold about Christ today that stirred my love for Him—and how did worship reshape my perspective or priorities?
