Knowing Christ Through His Word
Study is the practice of carefully engaging Scripture so that we may know God more faithfully and see Christ more clearly. While reading helps us become familiar with the Bible and meditation helps us remain with a passage, study invites us to slow down, ask questions, and understand what God has revealed. It is an act of worship that engages both the heart and the mind.
After His resurrection, Jesus walked with two disciples on the road to Emmaus and showed them that all of Scripture ultimately points to Him. In Luke 24:27 (ESV), “beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” Study helps us read the Bible with that same Christ-centered lens.
Every passage fits within the larger story of God's redemption, fulfilled in Jesus.
This discipline forms wisdom and discernment. As we understand the context, purpose, and message of Scripture, we become better equipped to recognize God's character and apply His truth with faithfulness. Study is not about collecting information or winning arguments. Its goal is communion with Christ. The more clearly we know Him through His Word, the more readily we trust Him, obey Him, and delight in Him.
Guided Practice
Today, choose a passage from your Bible reading and study it carefully.
As you read, ask:
What does this passage teach me about God's character?
What is happening in the historical and literary context?
How does this passage point to Christ?
What does it reveal about humanity's need for the gospel?
How does this truth invite me to trust or obey Jesus today?
If helpful, use a study Bible, commentary, Bible dictionary, or another trusted resource to deepen your understanding.
Write down one new insight you discovered and one practical way you can live in light of that truth today.
Pray:
"Lord, open my eyes to understand Your Word. Help me see Christ more clearly, treasure Him more deeply, and faithfully live out what You teach me."
