Scripture Focus
“One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life.”
—Psalm 27:4 (ESV)
“But one thing is necessary.”
—Luke 10:42 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
Simplicity is not the absence of things, but the presence of a clear and focused desire. In discipleship, simplicity emerges as our loves are clarified. Rather than being pulled in many directions, the disciple learns to orient life around what is most necessary—God Himself.
Scripture repeatedly centers formation on a singular pursuit. The psalmist names “one thing” as the aim of his seeking, while Jesus affirms that “one thing is necessary.” These statements do not deny the complexity of life, but they reveal its center. Scripture presents simplicity not as reduction, but as rightly ordered desire.
Discipline helps clarify what we are truly seeking. Through prayer, Scripture, rest, and obedience, competing claims on our attention are gently exposed. Over time, discipline trains us to recognize what distracts from love and what leads us toward God. Simplicity grows as desire is refined—not through force, but through sustained nearness to Christ.
As desire is clarified, life becomes more ordered and free. When the heart is centered, decisions become steadier. Attention becomes less scattered. Simplicity forms disciples who are not driven by urgency or excess, but guided by devotion. Formation unfolds as we learn to seek one thing above all else.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
God is clarifying my desires as I seek Him above all else.
Breath Prayer
Inhale: “One thing I seek, O Lord.”
Exhale: “Order my heart in You.”
How to Practice a Breath Prayer
Sit quietly and allow your breathing to slow. As you inhale, pray the first phrase, naming your singular desire. As you exhale, pray the second, offering your heart’s orientation to God. Continue for two to three minutes, returning gently if your attention wanders.
Practical Application
Notice one area of your day where your attention is divided. Rather than removing something, simply name what you are seeking in that moment. Ask God to clarify your desire and orient it toward Him.
Journal Prompt
What does my attention reveal about what I am seeking? How might God be inviting me into simplicity by clarifying my desires rather than adding new disciplines?
Closing Prayer
God, You know what my heart is drawn toward. Teach me to seek You as the one necessary thing. Clarify my desires, order my life, and form me through simple, faithful devotion. Amen.
Invitation
Disciples are formed through clarified desire. As we train for godliness, let us run with aim—seeking one thing and trusting God to order our lives around Him.
