Scripture Focus:
Matthew 6:17–18 (ESV)
“But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others… And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
Fasting as Realignment
Fasting is not about proving devotion but about realigning our desires so that God becomes our true source of satisfaction and strength. Jesus teaches that fasting is meant to be done quietly, “in secret,” before the Father who sees the heart. By removing the pressure of performance, Jesus reframes fasting as an inward practice rather than an outward display.
Fasting creates space for us to notice what we rely on most—comfort, control, entertainment, or habits—and invites us to shift that reliance back toward God. When we feel the absence of what we’ve set aside, the ache becomes a reminder to turn our attention to Him.
Deuteronomy 8:3 gives the deeper purpose: “Man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” Physical hunger points to a spiritual reality: we need more than what the world provides to sustain us. Fasting helps us recognize the ways we’ve been feeding our souls with lesser things and calls us back to the Word, presence, and faithfulness of God.
As we fast, God uses our hunger to draw us toward Himself, teaching us to rest in what truly satisfies.
Practice
Choose one small fast today—social media, a meal, a habit, or a convenience.
Each time you feel the pull toward it, pause and pray:
“Lord, realign my heart toward You.”
Reflection Question
What desire surfaces most quickly when I choose to fast, and what does it reveal about my heart?
