Scripture Focus:
Psalm 38:9 (ESV)
“O Lord, all my longing is before you; my sighing is not hidden from you.”
Repentance becomes deeper and more honest when we recognize that sin is often the surface expression of a deeper ache — a longing we have tried to satisfy apart from God.
Concrete Detail (Scripture):
Psalm 38:9 reveals David’s understanding of this truth: “O Lord, all my longing is before you; my sighing is not hidden from you.”
David does not begin by naming actions but by naming desire. He brings his longing — the ache beneath his choices — directly to God. This teaches us that sin is rarely random; it emerges from unmet needs, unhealed wounds, fears we haven’t faced, or desires we haven’t surrendered. God invites us to bring not only the behavior to Him, but the ache that produced it.
James 1:14 describes this inner pull: “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.”
James points to desire as the starting point of temptation, not failure or weakness. When we ignore the ache, we chase substitutes. When we acknowledge the ache, God meets us with truth and healing. Lent is a season where we allow God to trace our patterns back to their roots — not to shame us, but to free us. True repentance begins not with self-condemnation, but with the honest naming of what our hearts have been seeking.
When we bring our deeper longings into God’s presence, He not only forgives us — He heals the places where sin first took hold.
Practice
Sit quietly and ask: “What have I been aching for beneath my actions, thoughts, or habits?”
Write down one longing that feels especially present right now. Offer it to God in prayer, inviting Him to meet you with clarity and compassion.
Reflection Question
What longing has been shaping my decisions more than I realized?
