“Then Samuel took a stone and set it up… and called its name Ebenezer;
for he said, ‘Till now the Lord has helped us.’”
— 1 Samuel 7:12 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
Contentment is not rooted in what we possess, but in what we remember. Samuel raised a stone and called it Ebenezer as a physical reminder of divine help — a testimony to the God who had carried Israel, protected them, forgiven them, and fought for them.
“Till now the Lord has helped us.”
Those words hold the power to steady a heart.
In seasons of uncertainty or waiting, we often forget how faithfully God has met us in the past. Fear grows loud. Gratitude grows quiet. Contentment slips away. But remembrance restores what anxiety steals. When we look back and trace the fingerprints of God’s mercy, our trust grows deeper and our hearts grow calmer.
Samuel’s stone was not about nostalgia; it was about formation.
A reminder for future days.
A marker for generations to see.
A testimony that the God who was faithful then will be faithful again.
To remember is to breathe hope. To remember is to choose perspective. To remember is to train our souls in contentment — because the God who has helped us “till now” will not fail us in what comes next.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
Breath Prayer:
Inhale: Till now You have helped me.
Exhale: I trust You for what’s ahead.
How to Practice a Breath Prayer:
Breathe slowly and deliberately. Let your inhale bring to mind a moment God helped, provided, guided, or comforted you. Let your exhale become surrender — trusting that His faithfulness will continue.
Practical Application
Mark an Ebenezer. Write down three moments this year where God clearly helped, carried, or guided you.
Tell the story. Share one of those moments with someone today — remembrance becomes stronger when spoken.
Create a reminder. Place a small object (stone, note, bookmark) somewhere visible to remind you: Till now, the Lord has helped me.
Journal Prompt
What specific moments of God’s provision or protection come to mind when you look back over this year? How does remembering them strengthen your contentment right now?
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for every moment You have helped me, carried me, and remained faithful. Teach me to remember Your goodness when my heart feels uncertain. Let the testimony of “till now” anchor my trust in Your care for tomorrow. Amen.
Invitation to Train for Godliness, Run with Aim, and Finish the Race
Train your heart by remembering God’s faithfulness. Run your day anchored in what He has already done. Finish the evening trusting He will be just as faithful in the days ahead.
