Train for Godliness
Scripture
“Train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way.” —1 Timothy 4:7–8 ESV
Devotional
Paul speaks about godliness using the language of training. An athlete does not prepare for a race through intention alone. She repeatedly practices movements that strengthen and prepare her for what the race will require. In the same way, following Jesus involves intentionally arranging our lives around practices that keep us attentive and responsive to Him.
Yet spiritual training is never an attempt to manufacture Christlikeness through discipline. Earlier in the chapter, Paul points Timothy to “the words of the faith and of the good doctrine.” Our training begins with what Christ has already accomplished and depends upon the Spirit who lives within us. Prayer, Scripture, worship, fasting, and other practices place us before Jesus so that His grace can increasingly shape our desires and responses.
Paul later tells Timothy, “Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress.” Formation happens through repeated faithfulness. We return to Scripture when our attention wanders. We pray when dependence feels inconvenient. We practice generosity when our instinct is to hold tightly. We repent when sin is exposed. Over time, the Spirit uses these repeated acts of surrender to make the character of Christ increasingly visible in us.
The aim of training is godliness—a life that resembles Jesus. We train because Christ has already made us His own, and we want every part of life to come into greater agreement with Him. The practices are never the prize. Jesus is. Training simply helps us become the kind of people who are increasingly ready to trust Him, obey Him, and enjoy Him in every circumstance.
Reflection Question
What spiritual practice could help you become more attentive and responsive to Jesus in this season?
Guided Prayer
Jesus, You are the aim of my training. Keep me from turning spiritual practices into another way to measure myself or prove my worth. Holy Spirit, use the rhythms of prayer, Scripture, worship, repentance, and obedience to form the life of Christ within me. Give me grace to practice faithfully, patience with slow growth, and a growing desire to become more like Jesus. Train my heart for godliness so that my whole life increasingly reflects Him. Amen.
