Lord, Open My Eyes
Scripture
“Then Elisha prayed and said, ‘O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.’ So the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” —2 Kings 6:17 ESV
Devotional
Elisha’s servant wakes to an alarming reality: an enemy army has surrounded the city. From everything he can see, they are outnumbered, trapped, and in danger. Elisha sees the same army, yet he remains steady because he knows there is more to reality than what is immediately visible.
Elisha prays, “O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.” Suddenly the servant becomes aware of what had been true all along—the mountain is filled with the armies of God. God’s presence did not arrive when his eyes were opened. His opened eyes allowed him to recognize the presence and power that had already surrounded him.
Fear often narrows our vision. A problem becomes so large that it seems to occupy the entire landscape. Scripture continually opens our eyes to a greater reality. Christ is risen and reigning. He has defeated sin and death, sits at the right hand of the Father, intercedes for His people, and has given us His Spirit. Whatever surrounds us remains surrounded by His authority.
Faith learns to live from what God has revealed even when our circumstances have not yet changed. Jesus may not immediately remove what frightens us, yet He gives us a clearer vision of who stands with us within it. When fear tells you to measure reality only by what you can see, ask the Spirit to open your eyes again to the reigning Christ.
Reflection Question
What circumstance has become so large in your vision that you need Christ to help you see it again beneath His presence and authority?
Guided Prayer
Jesus, open my eyes to see what fear causes me to forget. You are risen, reigning, and present with me. When circumstances feel larger than my faith, remind me that nothing stands outside Your authority. Holy Spirit, steady my heart in what is eternally true and teach me to interpret what I see through the reality of Christ. Let confidence in Your presence shape the way I walk through today. Amen.
