His Kingdom Will Not Pass Away

Scripture

“And behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man… And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him.” —Daniel 7:13–14 ESV

Devotional

Daniel’s vision begins with chaos. Kingdoms rise like beasts from a restless sea, each displaying its own power and violence. Yet above all of them sits the Ancient of Days, completely unthreatened. Then Daniel sees “one like a son of man” coming with the clouds of heaven and receiving an everlasting kingdom. Jesus later takes this title for Himself. He is the Son of Man Daniel saw—the King whose authority comes from God and whose dominion will never be destroyed.

This vision gives us a larger perspective for ordinary life. We live among powers that appear permanent: cultures shift, leaders rise and fall, circumstances change, and our own lives can feel uncertain. Daniel reminds us that history is ultimately moving toward the reign of Christ. Jesus is already risen and enthroned, and one day every competing kingdom will give way to His visible rule.

That reality changes what deserves our allegiance now. If Christ’s kingdom is everlasting, then the values of His kingdom deserve to shape our lives even when they conflict with what seems powerful or rewarding in the present. We can pursue holiness when compromise feels easier, love when hostility seems stronger, and faithfulness when obedience appears unnoticed because we know which kingdom will remain.

Christian hope is ultimately confidence in a King. Jesus has received the kingdom, Jesus will return, and Jesus will make all things right. Our lives can be ordered around Him because His reign is more certain than anything we presently see. Everything else will pass away. Christ and His kingdom will remain.

Reflection Question

What feels powerful or permanent in your life right now, and how would seeing it beneath the everlasting reign of Jesus change the way you respond?

Guided Prayer

Jesus, You are the Son of Man, the risen King whose kingdom will never pass away. Lift my eyes above the circumstances that feel overwhelming or permanent and remind me that all things remain beneath Your authority. Holy Spirit, order my loyalties, desires, and decisions around the kingdom of Christ. Give me courage to live faithfully when another way seems easier, knowing that Jesus reigns now and will one day make His rule visible to all. Let my life bear witness to the King whose dominion has no end. Amen.
