By His Power

Scripture

“So that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him.” —2 Thessalonians 1:12 ESV

Devotional

Paul prays that God would fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by His power. That phrase matters. We can sincerely desire to become more faithful, patient, generous, disciplined, or obedient and still discover that desire alone cannot transform us. The Christian life requires a power beyond our own resolve.

God supplies that power through Christ. Jesus has already accomplished what we could never accomplish for ourselves: He has reconciled us to the Father, broken the dominion of sin, and given us His Spirit. The Spirit now works within us so that our desire to please God can increasingly become embodied obedience. Grace does not leave our good intentions untouched; it gives them strength to take form.

This changes the way we approach spiritual growth. Our resolutions become places of dependence rather than self-reliance. We can bring the habit we want to change, the obedience we keep postponing, or the good work we feel inadequate to carry out before Jesus and ask Him to supply what we lack. His power meets us as we respond faithfully to His Spirit.

And Paul gives this transformation an ultimate purpose: that Jesus would be glorified in us. The aim is larger than becoming a better version of ourselves. Christ is forming lives through which His goodness can be seen. When patience grows, temptation is resisted, love becomes costly, and obedience becomes steady, the glory belongs to the Savior whose grace made it possible.

Reflection Question

What good desire has remained mostly an intention, and how might you depend on Christ’s power to take one faithful step toward obedience today?

Guided Prayer

Jesus, You know the good things I desire to do and the places where my own resolve repeatedly falls short. Thank You that You have not left transformation dependent on my strength. Holy Spirit, take the desires that honor Christ and give them shape through faithful obedience. Supply the courage, discipline, wisdom, and endurance I lack. Let the change You produce in me point beyond me, so that the name of Jesus is increasingly glorified through my life. Amen.
