The God Who Sanctifies You
Scripture
“Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely… He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” —1 Thessalonians 5:23–24 ESV
Devotional
Paul ends his letter with a prayer that places the work of transformation exactly where it belongs: in the hands of God. “May the God of peace himself sanctify you.” The Christian life certainly involves obedience, discipline, repentance, and intentional practice, but beneath all of it is the faithful activity of God Himself. He is committed to forming His people into the likeness of Christ.
Sanctification reaches the whole person. Paul prays that their “spirit and soul and body” would be kept blameless at the coming of Jesus. Christ does not intend to occupy one spiritual corner of our lives. His grace reaches our thoughts, desires, bodies, relationships, habits, work, and hidden places. The Spirit patiently brings every part of us into increasing agreement with the life we have already received in Jesus.
This gives us a different way to think about growth. We can take our formation seriously without carrying it anxiously. We can practice prayer, Scripture, obedience, and repentance while remembering that these practices place us before the God who transforms. Our hope is not in becoming exceptionally good at spiritual disciplines. Our hope is in the faithful God who uses them to conform us to His Son.
Then comes Paul’s assurance: “He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” There may still be parts of your life where growth feels painfully slow. Christ has not abandoned His work there. The One who called you is still sanctifying you, and His faithfulness is greater than your inconsistency. You can keep offering yourself to Him because He has already committed Himself to finishing what His grace began.
Reflection Question
Where have you been carrying the pressure to change yourself instead of faithfully participating in the work God is already doing in you?
Guided Prayer
Jesus, thank You that my transformation rests within Your faithfulness. I offer my whole life to You—my thoughts, desires, body, habits, relationships, and hidden places. Holy Spirit, continue Your sanctifying work in every part of me. Teach me to practice obedience without striving to become my own savior, and to take growth seriously without carrying it anxiously. Where change feels slow, remind me that the God who called me is faithful. Form Christ in me until every part of my life increasingly belongs to Him. Amen.
