Christ Our Mediator
Scripture
“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all.” —1 Timothy 2:5–6 ESV
Devotional
Sin created a separation we could never cross on our own. No amount of moral effort, spiritual discipline, knowledge, or sincerity could reconcile sinful humanity to a holy God. Paul directs us to the One who can: Jesus Christ, our mediator. Fully God and truly human, He stands uniquely able to bring us back into fellowship with the Father.
Jesus mediates for us by giving Himself. Paul says He became our “ransom,” language that points to the costly price of our freedom. At the cross, Christ took upon Himself the judgment our sin deserved and opened the way for us to approach God in peace. Our access to the Father rests securely in the finished work of the Son.
This means we never come before God alone. When guilt tells us to hide, Christ is our mediator. When we feel unworthy to pray, Christ is our mediator. When we stumble again and wonder whether God still receives us, our confidence remains in Jesus rather than in the quality of our recent performance. He is the reason we can draw near.
And because Christ has brought us near, prayer becomes one of the great privileges of belonging to Him. Earlier in the chapter, Paul urges believers to pray for all people. Those who have been given access to God through Jesus can now bring the needs of the world before Him. We pray with confidence because our mediator lives, reigns, and has already made the way open.
Reflection Question
Where have you been allowing guilt, inadequacy, or spiritual performance to determine whether you feel able to approach God instead of trusting the mediation of Christ?
Guided Prayer
Jesus, thank You for becoming the mediator I could never provide for myself. You gave Yourself to bring me near to the Father, and my access to God rests in Your finished work. When shame tells me to hide or my failures make me hesitant to pray, remind me that You have already opened the way. Holy Spirit, teach me to approach the Father with confidence through Christ and to use that privilege to faithfully pray for others. Keep my hope anchored in Jesus, the One who gave Himself to make me His own. Amen.
