Christ Came to Save
Scripture
“The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” —1 Timothy 1:15 ESV
Devotional
Paul does not speak about grace as an abstract idea. He speaks as someone who knows exactly how much mercy he has received. He remembers his former life as a persecutor of the church and marvels that Jesus met him there with patience and grace. Paul’s past becomes a testimony to the kind of Savior Christ is: merciful toward sinners and powerful enough to transform them.
At the center of Christianity stands this announcement: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Jesus did not wait for humanity to climb its way toward God. The eternal Son came near, took on flesh, bore our sin at the cross, and rose again so that those who were far from God could be brought home. Grace begins with His movement toward us.
This keeps both pride and shame from having the final word. Pride cannot survive the realization that we needed to be rescued. Shame cannot survive the realization that Jesus willingly came to rescue us. We can tell the truth about our sin because the truth about Christ is greater: His mercy is sufficient, His cross has dealt with our guilt, and His Spirit is at work forming a new life within us.
Paul says that the mercy shown to him displayed the “perfect patience” of Jesus. Christ is still that patient with His people. He does not excuse sin, but He continues to call us toward repentance, restoration, and holiness. Our growth begins again and again at the same place: receiving the mercy of the Savior who came for sinners and trusting Him to form us into people who increasingly reflect His grace.
Reflection Question
Where do you need to let the mercy of Jesus speak louder than either your pride or your shame today?
Guided Prayer
Jesus, thank You that You came into the world to save sinners, including me. Keep me from minimizing my need for Your grace or believing my failures place me beyond Your mercy. Let Your cross humble me, Your forgiveness restore me, and Your patience draw me toward repentance. Holy Spirit, form a life in me that reflects the grace I have received. May the mercy of Christ become the deepest truth shaping how I see myself and how I extend grace to others. Amen.
