Beholding Christ and Responding in Love
Worship begins with Jesus Christ—who He is and what He has done. He is the image of the invisible God, the One through whom and for whom all things were created, and the One who has reconciled us to God through His cross. Worship is our response to Him. In John 4:23 (ESV), Jesus says, “the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth,” meaning worship is shaped by who God truly is, revealed in Christ, and awakened by the Spirit within us.
Throughout Scripture, worship is not merely expressed—it is formed by what we behold. In 2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV), we are told that as we behold the glory of the Lord, we are being transformed into His image. Worship is not just something we give; it is something that changes us. As we fix our attention on Christ—His beauty, His mercy, His faithfulness—our hearts are drawn to Him, and our lives begin to reflect Him.
Because of Christ’s finished work, worship is no longer an attempt to earn God’s favor—it is the response of those who have already received it. We come not to be accepted, but because we are accepted in Him. Worship becomes the offering of our attention, affection, and allegiance, shaped by the truth that He is worthy and we are His.
Guided Practice
Today, intentionally behold Christ and respond in worship.
Begin with Scripture: read a short passage that reveals who Jesus is (a Gospel passage or a Christ-centered text)
Turn on a worship song and engage with it—sing, reflect, or sit attentively
Speak to Christ directly: name what you see in Him—His kindness, authority, faithfulness, sacrifice
Offer your day to Him: surrender your plans, desires, and expectations as an act of trust
Let this be unhurried. Stay with Him long enough for your attention to become affection.
