Hungering for Christ Above All
Fasting begins with Jesus Christ, who is Himself our true sustenance. When He was tempted in the wilderness, He answered in Matthew 4:4 (ESV), “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Fasting does not create our need for God—it reveals it, and directs it toward Christ, who alone satisfies.
Throughout Scripture, fasting is a way of turning the whole self toward God. It is not merely abstaining, but reorienting—allowing physical hunger to awaken spiritual desire. In Joel 2:12 (ESV), the Lord calls, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting…” Fasting becomes a response of love, a returning to God with undivided attention.
In Christ, fasting is no longer about proving devotion, but about deepening communion. When we set something aside—often food—we are making space to abide with Him more intentionally. As hunger rises, it becomes an invitation: to remember Him, to rely on Him, and to receive from Him. Fasting forms us by teaching us that we are sustained not by what we consume, but by Christ Himself.
Guided Practice
Today, fast in a way that turns your attention toward Christ.
Choose a form of fasting that is appropriate for you:
Skip one meal and use that time to be with God
Abstain from a specific food or comfort
Step away from something that occupies your attention (technology, noise, entertainment)
As you feel the absence of what you’ve set aside:
Pause and turn your attention to Christ
Pray honestly: “You are my sustenance. Help me to hunger for You.”
Sit briefly in that awareness rather than rushing to fill it
When you break your fast, do so with gratitude, receiving what you eat or return to as a gift, not a given.
Reflection Prompt
What did my hunger reveal about what I rely on—and how did it draw me to Christ as my true source of life?
