Tracing the Story of God Through Scripture
Study is the practice of slowing down to understand God’s Word more deeply. While reading helps us become familiar with Scripture and meditation helps us dwell on it, study helps us understand it. It teaches us to ask good questions, explore context, and see how individual passages fit within the larger story of God’s redemptive work.
When Jesus walked with the disciples on the road to Emmaus, He showed them how all of Scripture pointed to Him. In Luke 24:27 (ESV), “beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” Study helps us read the Bible the same way—not as disconnected stories, but as one unified narrative centered on Christ.
This discipline forms wisdom and discernment. As we learn the historical setting, literary context, and theological message of Scripture, we become better equipped to recognize God’s character and understand His purposes. Study is not about accumulating information for its own sake. It is about knowing God more accurately so that we may trust, love, and follow Him more faithfully.

What is happening in the surrounding context?
What does this passage reveal about God’s character?
How does this connect to the larger story of Scripture?
How does it point to Christ?
