✨ Today’s Discipline | Fasting

Making Room for Christ by Letting Go

Fasting is the practice of voluntarily abstaining from something good for a period of time so that we can give greater attention to Christ. At its core, fasting is not about self-denial for its own sake; it is about making space for deeper dependence on God. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He declared in Matthew 4:4 (ESV), “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Fasting reminds us that Christ is our true sustenance.

Throughout Scripture, fasting often accompanied prayer, repentance, worship, and the seeking of God’s guidance. It was a tangible way of expressing spiritual hunger. By setting aside something we normally rely upon, we become more aware of our need for God and more attentive to His presence. Fasting reveals where we seek comfort, control, or satisfaction apart from Christ.

This discipline forms dependence. Hunger, discomfort, and longing become invitations to turn our hearts toward Jesus rather than immediately satisfying ourselves. As we practice fasting, we learn that Christ is not only sufficient in moments of abundance, but also in moments of need. What begins as an act of abstaining becomes an act of abiding.

Guided Practice

Today, choose one thing to intentionally set aside for a period of time.

You might:

  • Skip a meal and dedicate that time to prayer

  • Fast from social media or entertainment

  • Abstain from a comfort or habit that regularly occupies your attention

Whenever you feel the absence of what you’ve set aside:

  • Pause before Christ

  • Offer a brief prayer

  • Read a short passage of Scripture

  • Remind yourself that your deepest need is found in Him

Pray:

“Jesus, teach me to hunger for You more than the things I often use for comfort, distraction, or security. Help me find my satisfaction in You.”

Reflection Prompt

What did my fasting reveal about the desires of my heart, and how did it draw me toward greater dependence on Christ?
