Drawing Near to the Father Through Christ
Prayer is the practice of communion with God. Through Jesus Christ, we have been welcomed into the presence of the Father, not as strangers seeking acceptance, but as children who belong. In Hebrews 4:16 (ESV), we are invited to “draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Prayer is the privilege of that invitation.
Jesus lived a life marked by prayer. Before major decisions, after demanding seasons of ministry, and in moments of sorrow and joy, He withdrew to commune with the Father. Prayer was not an interruption to His life; it was the source from which His life and ministry flowed. As those united to Christ, we are invited into that same rhythm of dependence, trust, and fellowship.
Prayer also forms us because it continually returns us to reality. We remember that God is God and we are not. We bring our fears, hopes, questions, failures, and gratitude into His presence and discover again that He is faithful. Prayer does not simply change circumstances; it changes us by teaching us to trust the One who holds every circumstance in His hands.
Guided Practice
Today, spend intentional time in prayer with the goal of communion rather than completion.
Begin by acknowledging God’s presence and thanking Him for His grace
Spend a few moments praising Him for who He is
Bring your needs, concerns, and desires honestly before Him
Pray for someone else and their needs
End by surrendering your plans and expectations to Christ
After you finish speaking, remain in silence for a minute or two. Allow yourself to simply be with God.
Throughout the day, return to Him with short prayers such as:
“Jesus, help me trust You.”
“Father, thank You for being near.”
“Spirit, guide me in this moment.”
Reflection Prompt
What burden, desire, or area of my life did I bring before God today—and how did prayer deepen my trust in His presence and care?
