Making Room for What Matters Most
Simplicity is the practice of clearing away what distracts, crowds, or competes so that our lives can be more fully centered on Christ. Jesus teaches in Luke 10:41–42 (ESV), “You are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary.” Simplicity is the intentional pursuit of that “one thing”—a life ordered around communion with Him.
Our hearts easily become divided by excess noise, endless options, constant comparison, and the pressure to carry more than we were meant to hold. Yet Christ does not invite us into a life of endless accumulation. He invites us into abiding. In Matthew 6:21 (ESV), Jesus says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Simplicity helps reveal what is truly shaping our hearts and affections.
This discipline is not ultimately about minimalism or outward reduction. It is about inward clarity. As we release what is unnecessary, we create space to attend to Christ more fully. Simplicity forms contentment because it reminds us that Christ Himself is sufficient. What once felt urgent begins to lose its hold when our hearts are anchored in Him.
Guided Practice
Today, intentionally simplify one area of your life.
Choose one space to unclutter:
Your environment
Your schedule
Your digital attention
Your mental load
Ask yourself:
What is distracting me from attentiveness to Christ?
What am I holding onto out of fear, pressure, or comparison?
Then take one practical step:
Remove something unnecessary
Say no to something non-essential
Create a few moments of quiet space without input or distraction
As you do, invite Christ into the space you are creating.
Reflection Prompt
What felt most difficult to release today—and what might that reveal about what my heart is relying on besides Christ?
