Listening for Christ Above the Noise
Silence is the practice of quieting the noise around us so that we can attend more fully to Christ within us. He is always present, always speaking through His Word and Spirit, yet our lives are often too crowded to notice. In Psalms 62:1 (ESV), David writes, “For God alone my soul waits in silence.” Silence is not emptiness; it is waiting with expectation before the One who is near.
Jesus Himself regularly withdrew to quiet places to commune with the Father. In Mark 1:35 (ESV), we see Him rising early to pray in a desolate place. If the Son of God made space for stillness and communion, silence is not optional for formation—it is part of abiding in Him.
Silence also reveals the condition of our hearts. When distractions fade, our fears, anxieties, and restless thoughts often rise to the surface. Yet Christ meets us there with gentleness, not condemnation. Silence trains us to remain with Him instead of escaping ourselves. Over time, we begin to recognize that His presence is steadier than the noise that surrounds us.
Guided Practice
Today, enter into silence with the intention of being attentive to Christ.
Set aside 5–10 minutes in a quiet place.
Put away distractions and allow yourself to become still
Begin with a simple prayer: “Jesus, help me become aware of Your presence.”
Sit quietly without rushing to fill the space
When thoughts arise:
Acknowledge them without judgment
Gently return your attention to Christ
If helpful, quietly repeat:
“For God alone my soul waits in silence.”
Let silence become a place of communion rather than performance.
Reflection Prompt
What surfaced in the quiet today—and how did I experience Christ meeting me there?
