Receiving the Word of God as Daily Bread
Study is the practice of regularly receiving God’s Word—not merely as information, but as nourishment for the soul. It is how we come to know God, understand His ways, and be shaped by His truth. In Matthew 4:4 (ESV), Jesus says, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Just as the body depends on daily food, the soul depends on the steady intake of God’s Word.
Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself through His Word. It tells the unified story of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration, drawing us into His purposes. In 2 Timothy 3:16–17 (ESV), we are reminded that “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” Scripture reading is not passive—it actively forms and equips us for life with God.
This practice differs from study or meditation in its focus on breadth and consistency. It is about showing up daily to hear from God, trusting that over time, His Word will shape our thinking, renew our minds, and anchor our lives. Scripture reading builds a foundation—one that allows every other discipline to deepen and take root.
Guided Practice
Today, approach Scripture with attentiveness and openness.
Follow your reading plan or choose a passage (a chapter or section of Scripture)
Begin with a simple prayer: “Lord, help me to see and receive Your Word today.”
Read the passage slowly, noticing what stands out
Ask: What does this reveal about God? What is happening in this passage?
Resist the urge to rush or overanalyze. The goal is not to master the text, but to be present with God through it.
If possible, write down one truth or observation to carry with you throughout the day.
Reflection Prompt
What did I notice about God in today’s reading—and how does that shape the way I see Him right now?
