✨ Today’s Discipline | Sabbath

Resting in the Finished Work of God

Sabbath is the practice of ceasing from striving in order to delight in God and trust His sustaining power. From the beginning, God established this rhythm in Genesis 2:2–3 (ESV), not because He needed rest, but to set a pattern for His people—a rhythm of work and rest that reflects dependence, not self-sufficiency.

Sabbath reveals what we truly believe about God. In Exodus 16, God provides manna daily and instructs His people not to gather on the seventh day, teaching them to trust that He will provide enough. To stop working, even for a moment, is an act of faith. It declares that God is at work, even when we are not.

In Christ, Sabbath becomes deeply personal. Jesus invites us in Matthew 11:28 (ESV), “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Sabbath is no longer just a command to obey, but an invitation to receive—to rest in His finished work, to be with Him without pressure to produce, and to remember that our identity is not earned, but given.

Guided Practice

Today, intentionally enter into rest.

Set aside a portion of your day—whether a few hours or longer—to step away from your usual responsibilities and rhythms of productivity.

  • Put aside work, planning, and anything that feels like striving

  • Choose activities that restore your awareness of God’s goodness—slow time outside, an unhurried meal, quiet reading, or simply sitting in stillness

  • Let your pace be gentle and unforced; resist the urge to make your rest “productive”

If you feel the pull to return to work or worry, gently remind yourself: God is sustaining what I cannot control.

End your Sabbath by thanking God—not for what you accomplished, but for His presence, provision, and faithfulness.

Reflection Prompt

What does my difficulty (or ease) in resting reveal about what I believe God is responsible for—and what I believe I am responsible for?
