Turning Again to Christ

Confession and repentance are the practices of honestly bringing our sin before God and joyfully turning back to Christ. They are not acts of earning forgiveness but of receiving it. Because Jesus has already borne our sin and satisfied God's justice through His death on the cross, we no longer have to hide our failures. We are invited to bring them into the light, trusting that His grace is greater than our guilt.

David captures the heart of repentance in Psalms 32:5 (ESV): “I acknowledged my sin to you… and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.” Confession is agreeing with God about our sin. Repentance is turning away from that sin and returning to Him. Both are gifts of grace. They keep our hearts tender, remind us of our continual need for Christ, and deepen our appreciation for the mercy that is ours through the gospel.

These practices also form humility and hope. Humility, because they remind us that we never outgrow our need for the cross. Hope, because they remind us that God's mercy is never exhausted. Every act of repentance is another opportunity to experience the Father's welcoming embrace, the cleansing work of Christ, and the renewing power of the Holy Spirit. We are not defined by our failures but by the Savior who has redeemed us.

Guided Practice

Today, spend a few quiet moments allowing the Holy Spirit to examine your heart.

Pray:

"Father, search me and reveal anything that is keeping me from wholehearted fellowship with You."

Then reflect:

• Is there a sin I need to confess?

• Is there someone I need to forgive or seek forgiveness from?

• Is there an attitude, habit, or desire that Christ is inviting me to surrender?

Confess honestly, trusting God's promise of forgiveness.

Then thank Jesus for His finished work and receive His grace with gratitude. If needed, take one practical step toward reconciliation or renewed obedience today.

Finish by reading 1 John 1:9 (ESV) and resting in the assurance that God is faithful to forgive and cleanse those who come to Him through Christ.

Pray:

"Lord Jesus, thank You that Your mercy is greater than my sin. Create in me a clean heart, renew my love for You, and help me walk in joyful obedience. Thank You that I never have to hide from the God who has welcomed me by grace."
