Delighting in the Word of Christ
Scripture meditation is the practice of slowing down to delight in God's Word until it shapes our hearts. Rather than rushing through a passage to finish a reading plan, meditation invites us to remain with a few verses, turning them over in our minds and allowing them to draw our attention back to Christ throughout the day. It is not about reading more—it is about receiving more deeply.
The psalmist writes in Psalms 1:2–3 (ESV) that the one who delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night is "like a tree planted by streams of water." Meditation nourishes the soul in the same way water nourishes a tree. As we continually return to God's Word, our roots grow deeper into His truth, enabling us to remain steadfast through every season of life.
Scripture meditation also teaches us to abide in Christ. His Word becomes more than information to remember—it becomes truth that renews our minds, comforts our hearts, and reshapes our desires. The Holy Spirit uses the Word to make us more like Jesus, gently drawing our thoughts back to Him again and again throughout the day. As we linger with Scripture, we discover that the goal is not merely to understand God's Word, but to know the God who has spoken it.
Guided Practice
Today, choose one verse from your Bible reading and stay with it.
Read the verse slowly several times.
Notice a word or phrase that captures your attention.
Ask:
What does this reveal about Christ?
What invitation or promise is Jesus offering me here?
Repeat the verse throughout your day whenever you have a quiet moment.
End your day by reading the verse one final time and thanking God for what He has shown you.
Rather than rushing on to something new, allow God's Word to quietly accompany you wherever you go today.
Pray:
"Lord Jesus, let Your Word dwell richly within me. Plant Your truth deep in my heart, renew my mind by Your Spirit, and teach me to delight in Your voice above every other voice. Help me abide in You today through Your Word."
Reflection Prompt
What truth from today's Scripture stayed with me throughout the day, and how did meditating on it help me delight in Christ and remain rooted in His promises?
