✨ Today’s Discipline | Simplicity

Living with an Undivided Heart

Simplicity is the practice of intentionally ordering our lives so that Christ remains at the center. It is not about having the fewest possessions or following a minimalist lifestyle. Rather, simplicity is about removing whatever competes for our attention, affection, and trust so that we can love Jesus with an undivided heart. It is choosing what is eternal over what is merely urgent.

Jesus reminds His disciples in Matthew 6:21 (ESV), “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Simplicity invites us to examine what we treasure. Our calendars, spending, conversations, and habits often reveal what has captured our hearts. As we intentionally simplify, we make room for the things that truly matter—communion with Christ, love for our neighbor, and faithful stewardship of the life God has entrusted to us.

This discipline forms contentment because it teaches us that Christ is enough. The world continually tells us that happiness is found in acquiring more, doing more, or becoming more. The gospel tells a different story. In Christ we have received every spiritual blessing, and nothing we accumulate can compare to knowing Him. Simplicity frees us from the exhausting pursuit of "more" so that we can joyfully receive the sufficiency of Jesus.

Guided Practice

Today, prayerfully consider one area of your life that feels crowded.

Ask yourself:

  • What is competing for my affection more than Christ?

  • What unnecessary distraction can I release today?

  • How can I create more room to enjoy God's presence?

Choose one practical step:

  • Clear a small space in your home.

  • Turn off unnecessary notifications.

  • Protect time that would otherwise be filled with distractions.

  • Decline one unnecessary commitment.

  • Replace ten minutes of scrolling with ten minutes in Scripture or prayer.

Remember, simplicity is not about having less for its own sake—it is about having more room to delight in Christ.

Pray:

"Father, You have given me everything I need in Christ. Help me release whatever distracts my heart from You. Teach me to treasure Jesus above every earthly possession, achievement, or distraction, and to live with an undivided heart that seeks first Your kingdom."
