“But for me it is good to be near God;
I have made the Lord God my refuge,
that I may tell of all Your works.”
— Psalm 73:28 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
Contentment becomes far more than a feeling when we recognize this truth: our greatest good is God Himself.
Not His gifts.
Not His timing.
Not the outcomes we long for.
But His nearness.
Asaph spent most of Psalm 73 wrestling with comparison, envy, and the apparent unfairness of life. But the turning point came not when circumstances shifted, but when his nearness to God became the lens through which everything else was interpreted.
In God’s presence, the restless heart becomes rooted.
In His nearness, the discontent soul finds clarity.
In His refuge, our lesser desires begin to quiet.
The nearness of God doesn’t remove the tension of our longing, but it transforms it. It leads us into the kind of contentment that isn’t fragile or fleeting — the kind that doesn’t crumble when life feels uneven.
To draw near to God is to return to what is truly good.
To take refuge in Him is to choose the only shelter that can hold the weight of our lives. And to delight in His presence is to learn that contentment is not found in what we possess, but in Who possesses us.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
Breath Prayer:
Inhale: Your nearness is my good.
Exhale: You are my refuge.
How to Practice a Breath Prayer:
Find a quiet moment to breathe slowly. With every inhale, imagine drawing close to God’s presence. With every exhale, picture settling deeper into His refuge. Let His nearness calm the places where your heart feels hurried.
Practical Application
Seek His nearness. Spend five extra minutes in prayer or Scripture today — not asking, but simply being with God.
Return to your refuge. When stress rises, pause and whisper, “You are my refuge.”
Name one goodness you have experienced because of God’s nearness — comfort, strength, clarity, conviction, peace.
Journal Prompt
Where have you sensed God’s nearness recently? How might remembering that His presence is your good reshape what you long for or stress over today?
Closing Prayer
Lord, remind me today that Your nearness is my greatest good. Draw my heart close to You, quiet every anxious thought, and anchor my contentment in Your presence. Be my refuge and my joy, and let my life testify to Your goodness. Amen.
