The King in His Splendor

Scripture

Psalm 45

“You are the most handsome of the sons of men; grace is poured upon your lips; therefore God has blessed you forever.” — Psalm 45:2 (ESV)

Devotional

Psalm 45 is a royal wedding psalm, full of beauty, majesty, and celebration. At first glance, it honors an earthly king, but the language quickly stretches beyond any merely human ruler. The psalm speaks of a throne that endures forever, a scepter of uprightness, and a king who loves righteousness and hates wickedness. It is a portrait that finds its true fulfillment in Christ.

Jesus is the greater King this psalm ultimately points to. He is beautiful not merely in appearance, but in holiness, righteousness, and grace. “Grace is poured upon your lips.” Everything He speaks is true, pure, and life-giving. His words do not manipulate or flatter; they reveal the heart of God and call His people into life.

The psalm also shows us that Christ’s kingship is not harsh or self-serving. He rides out “for the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness.” This is the kind of King He is. He rules in truth. He reigns with meekness. He loves what is right. In a world where power is often distorted, Jesus shows us that true authority is beautiful because it is perfectly good.

And this psalm does not only reveal the King; it also hints at the joy of belonging to Him. The bride is called to leave behind former allegiances and behold the beauty of the king. This is the shape of discipleship. To follow Christ is to turn from lesser loyalties and fix our hearts on the One who is altogether worthy.

Psalm 45 invites us to recover wonder. Christ is not only useful to us; He is glorious. He is not only our helper; He is our King. And the more clearly we see Him, the more our hearts are drawn to trust, love, and worship Him. His beauty is what makes His rule desirable. His goodness is what makes surrender a joy.
