Numbers 6
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you.” — Numbers 6:24–25 (ESV)
Devotional
Numbers 6 closes with one of the most beautiful blessings in all of Scripture. These are not merely kind words spoken over God’s people. This is the Lord Himself declaring what He is like toward those who belong to Him. He blesses. He keeps. He shines His face upon His people. He is gracious. He lifts up His countenance and gives peace.
This blessing is deeply personal. The repetition of “the Lord” makes that clear. Peace is not presented as a vague feeling or a detached gift floating out in the distance. It comes from the personal presence of God. To be kept by Him is to be held in His faithful care. To have His face shine upon you is to be received with favor, not suspicion. To know His peace is to live beneath His gracious regard.
And the chapter ends with a remarkable line: “So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.” God’s people are marked by His name. They belong to Him. His blessing is tied to His covenant commitment, not their ability to secure His favor for themselves.
This finds its fullness in Christ. In Jesus, the grace and favor of God are not withheld from us. He is the true priest who does not merely pronounce blessing, but secures it. Through His finished work, we are brought near, kept in the love of God, and given peace with Him. Because of Christ, this blessing is not a fragile hope hanging on our performance. It is a covenant reality grounded in God’s own faithfulness.
So when you hear these words, do not hear them as distant poetry. Hear them as the heart of God toward His people. In Christ, you are not left to wonder whether He will keep you. You are not left to earn His gracious face. You are received, named, and held within His blessing.
Reflection Prompt
What would change in the way I move through today if I truly believed I am being kept, graced, and given peace by the Lord Himself?
