Hebrews 3
“Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus.” — Hebrews 3:1 (ESV)
Devotional
Hebrews 3 gives a simple and weighty command: “consider Jesus.” The call is not merely to think about Him in passing, but to fix the attention of the heart and mind upon Him with seriousness and care. This is where perseverance begins—not with ourselves, but with Christ.
The passage compares Jesus with Moses. Moses was faithful as a servant in God’s house, but Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. The point is not to diminish Moses, but to magnify Jesus. He is greater. He is not simply one more messenger within God’s redemptive story; He is the Son through whom the house itself exists and is held together.
That matters because Hebrews 3 is also a warning passage. The people of God in the wilderness hardened their hearts, even after seeing His works. Their problem was not lack of exposure, but lack of faith. They heard, but they did not trust. They witnessed, but they did not continue in confidence. The danger, then, is not merely external disobedience, but an unbelieving heart that slowly turns away from the living God.
And this is why the answer is so clear: consider Jesus. The heart is not softened by self-focus. It is kept by looking steadily at Christ. He is faithful where others were not. He does not fail in His obedience, nor does He abandon the people entrusted to Him. He is the one in whom our confidence is well placed.
This passage also reminds us that perseverance is communal. “Exhort one another every day.” We are not meant to endure in isolation. God often keeps His people through the faithful presence and words of other believers who remind us of what is true when our hearts grow dull.
So today, hear the invitation and the warning together. Do not let your heart grow hard through unbelief. Do not let familiarity make you casual with Christ. Fix your attention on Him again. Consider His faithfulness, His sufficiency, and His nearness. The one who calls you to hold fast is Himself worthy of your full confidence.
Reflection Prompt
Where has my heart grown dull or distracted, and what would it look like to intentionally consider Jesus again today?
