Hebrews 6
“We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain.” — Hebrews 6:19 (ESV)
Devotional
Hebrews 6 is a passage of both warning and reassurance, but it does not leave us suspended in fear. It leads us to hope—real hope, strong hope, hope anchored not in ourselves but in the promises of God.
The writer points to Abraham, who received God’s promise and learned to wait in faith. That waiting was not empty. It was held by the character of God Himself. Because God desired to show the unchangeable nature of His purpose, He confirmed His promise with an oath. The point is deeply comforting: God binds His promise to His own faithful character. He cannot lie, and He does not change.
That is why the hope described here is “a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul.” An anchor does not remove the storm, but it keeps the soul from being carried away. The Christian life is not anchored by circumstances, feelings, or visible outcomes. It is anchored by the God who has spoken and by the Christ who has gone before us.
This is where the passage becomes explicitly Christ-centered. Our hope “enters into the inner place behind the curtain,” where Jesus has gone “as a forerunner on our behalf.” He is not merely the object of our hope from a distance; He is the ground of it. Christ has entered the presence of God for us. He has secured access to the Father through His finished work, and because He is there, our hope is already fastened to something eternal and unshakable.
So Hebrews 6 does not call you to generate certainty from within. It calls you to rest in the certainty of God’s promise fulfilled in Christ. Your soul may feel pressure, delay, or uncertainty, but if your hope is in Jesus, it is not drifting. It is anchored in the very presence of God.
Reflection Prompt
What have I been treating as the anchor of my soul, and how is God inviting me to rest more fully in the unshakable hope I have in Christ?
