Scripture Focus
“As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt.” – 1 Samuel 18:1–4 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
After David’s victory over Goliath, God gave him something just as vital as courage—He gave him Jonathan. Their friendship was marked not by convenience, but by covenant. Jonathan laid aside his royal robe and armor, willingly affirming God’s calling on David’s life, even at great personal cost.
Trusting God doesn’t mean walking alone. In seasons of loss, disappointment, or uncertainty, one of the ways God shows His goodness is through faithful friends who remind us of His promises and stand beside us in the cost of obedience. Jonathan’s covenant love showed David that God’s faithfulness could also be seen through human loyalty.
When our hearts struggle to trust, God often strengthens us through relationships that reflect His steadfastness—friendships that steady our steps and remind us we are not abandoned.
