✨ Today’s Discipline | Prayer

Coming Near to God Through Christ

Prayer is the practice of intentionally turning our attention toward God and communing with Him through Jesus Christ. It is one of the greatest privileges of the Christian life. Because of Christ’s finished work, we do not approach God as outsiders hoping to be welcomed, but as beloved children invited into the Father’s presence. In Hebrews 4:16 (ESV), we are encouraged to “draw near to the throne of grace” with confidence because mercy and grace are found there.

Jesus consistently modeled a life of prayer. He withdrew from the crowds, sought the Father in quiet places, and remained dependent upon Him. Prayer was not simply something Jesus did; it was part of how He lived. As we pray, we follow His example and participate in the relationship He has made possible for us.

Prayer forms trust because it reminds us that God is both sovereign and near. It is where we bring our fears, desires, questions, gratitude, and needs before Him. Prayer does not require polished words or perfect faith. It simply requires a willing heart that turns toward God. Over time, prayer reshapes our desires, deepens our dependence, and teaches us to rest in the care of our Father.

Guided Practice

Today, set aside intentional time to pray. You may find it helpful to use this simple pattern:

  • Adoration: Praise God for who He is

  • Confession: Bring areas of sin, weakness, or struggle before Him

  • Thanksgiving: Thank Him for specific evidences of His grace

  • Supplication: Present your needs and the needs of others

After you finish speaking, remain quiet for a minute or two. Allow yourself to simply rest in God's presence.

Throughout the day, return to Him with short prayers such as:

"Jesus, help me trust You.""Father, thank You for Your faithfulness.""Holy Spirit, guide me today."

Pray:

"Lord, teach me to pray. Draw my heart toward You and deepen my confidence in Your presence and care."

Reflection Prompt

What did I bring before God in prayer today, and how did spending time with Him shape my perspective on that situation?
