Scripture Focus
“But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,
but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.’”
—Luke 10:41–42 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
Martha’s hands were full with service. Mary’s heart was still in worship. And Jesus gently reminded them both—only one thing is necessary.
To abide is to choose the better portion: the presence of Christ. It is not a rejection of service or productivity, but a reordering of priorities. The soul’s first need is not to accomplish for Jesus—but to sit with Him.
Anxious and troubled hearts often stem from misaligned affections. We chase affirmation, manage expectations, and stretch ourselves thin, believing fruitfulness is found in what we do. But Mary shows us the deeper way: fruitfulness begins in being with Him.
Abiding asks something of us. It calls us to pause. To listen. To believe that time at Jesus’ feet is never wasted. That the invisible work of presence is more enduring than the visible work of performance.
What we do for Him must flow from time spent with Him. Otherwise, we serve on empty. But when we choose the better portion—His nearness—no one can take it from us.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
Breath Prayer:
Inhale: One thing is necessary…
Exhale: Let me choose You.
How to Practice a Breath Prayer
In a moment of busyness today—before a task, after a conversation, or in the middle of your to-do list—pause. Breathe in the reminder that only one thing is needed. Let that truth reshape your attention.
Practical Application
Reflect on your daily rhythm.
Where are you showing up like Martha—distracted and anxious?
Where can you create space to sit like Mary?
Today, practice choosing the better portion. Even for five minutes, be still in His presence. No agenda. Just you and Jesus.
Journal Prompt
What am I anxious and troubled about today?
What would it look like to choose presence over performance in this area?
Closing Prayer
Jesus, I confess that I often rush past You in my effort to serve You. But You want my heart before my hands. You call me to sit before I stand, to receive before I give. Teach me to choose You—again and again—as the better portion. Anchor me in what matters most: abiding in Your presence. Amen.
Invitation to Live with Truth, Goodness, and Beauty
Truth: Only one thing is truly necessary—being with Jesus.
Goodness: You are not loved for what you do but for who you are in Him.
Beauty: A quiet heart at the feet of Christ radiates peace that cannot be taken away.
