“Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.” — Hebrews 12:2, ESV
Devotional
Hebrews describes the Christian life as a race that requires endurance, but the center of the passage is not the strength of the runner. It is Jesus. He is the founder and perfecter of our faith, the One who began the work and the One who will bring it to completion. We do not keep going by staring at ourselves, measuring our progress, or obsessing over how far we still have to run. We endure by looking to Christ.
This changes the way we understand perseverance. The call to lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely is real, but it does not rest on self-generated determination. We release what hinders us because Jesus has already secured our freedom. Through His death and resurrection, He has broken the power of sin and joined us to His life. The race before us is not an attempt to earn His acceptance. It is the path we walk because we already belong to Him.
Jesus knows what it is to endure. He faced hostility, rejection, suffering, and the shame of the cross, yet He remained faithful to the Father. He endured “for the joy that was set before him,” completing the work of redemption and taking His seat at the right hand of God. His suffering was not meaningless, and His endurance was not in vain. The cross gave way to resurrection, victory, and glory.
The writer of Hebrews knows that believers can become weary and fainthearted. He does not shame them for their weakness. He tells them to consider Christ. When our attention becomes fixed on difficulty, disappointment, or our own limitations, the road can feel impossible. Looking to Jesus does not deny the weight of the race. It reminds us that the One who calls us forward has already overcome everything that threatens to undo us.
Christ is not only waiting at the finish line. He is present with us now. By His Spirit, He strengthens tired hearts, corrects wandering steps, and renews courage for the next act of faithfulness. We may not see the whole course ahead, but we do not need to. We need the Savior who has promised never to leave us.
So when the race feels long, return your gaze to Jesus. He began your faith, He sustains it today, and He will faithfully complete it. Your hope is not in running perfectly, but in the perfect Savior who holds you through every mile.
