A Sincere and Pure Devotion to Christ

“But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.”—2 Corinthians 11:3 ESV

Paul’s concern for the Corinthians is deeply personal. False teachers were presenting another version of Jesus and another gospel, and Paul feared that the church’s allegiance to Christ was being quietly redirected. Their greatest danger was not simply misunderstanding a doctrine. It was losing the simplicity of wholehearted devotion to the real Jesus.

This is still one of the most subtle threats to spiritual formation. Our hearts can become crowded with voices that reshape Jesus into someone more useful to our preferences: a means to success, affirmation, comfort, influence, or self-improvement. Yet the Jesus of Scripture will not remain at the edges of our lives. He is Lord, Savior, Bridegroom, and King. He calls us to love Him for who He truly is.

“Sincere and pure devotion” does not mean possessing perfect emotions toward Christ every day. It describes an undivided allegiance that keeps returning to Him. We learn His character through Scripture, submit our assumptions to His truth, repent when competing loves begin occupying His place, and ask the Spirit to deepen our affection for Him.

The gospel continually brings us back to the reason Jesus is worthy of such devotion. He loved us and gave Himself for us. He bore our sin, reconciled us to the Father, and made us His own. Our hearts are safest when they are centered on Him. The aim of spiritual formation is ultimately this: that Jesus would increasingly become the One we trust, treasure, obey, and love above everything else.

What voice, desire, or expectation has been competing for the devotion that belongs to Christ?

Guided Prayer

Jesus, keep my heart centered on You. Guard me from distorted pictures of who You are and from desires that slowly take Your place. Holy Spirit, lead me again and again into the truth of Christ revealed in Scripture. Purify my loves, strengthen my allegiance, and awaken deeper affection for the Savior who gave Himself for me. Let my life grow from a sincere and wholehearted devotion to You. Amen.
