Give Yourself First to the Lord

“And this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.—2 Corinthians 8:5 ESV

Devotional

Before Paul speaks about what the Macedonian believers gave, he tells us whom they gave themselves to. Their generosity flowed from a deeper surrender: they belonged to the Lord. Christ had become the center of their lives, and everything else—possessions, priorities, relationships, and resources—was reordered around that belonging.

This gets to the heart of Christian obedience. Jesus is worthy of more than individual acts of service or sacrifice. He gave Himself completely for us, and grace awakens a response that says, “My whole life is Yours.” Our time belongs to Him. Our abilities belong to Him. Our plans, money, relationships, bodies, and futures are placed into the hands of the One who redeemed us.

Giving ourselves to Christ also changes the way we discern what faithfulness requires. Instead of beginning with, “How much do I have to give?” or “What am I supposed to do?” we begin with surrender to Jesus Himself. The Spirit then teaches us how that surrender should take shape in the particular responsibilities and opportunities before us.

There is freedom in belonging wholly to Christ. We no longer have to protect every part of our lives as though everything depends on us. Jesus has already given Himself to us, and He is faithful with everything we entrust back to Him. The Christian life becomes a continual offering of ourselves to the Savior who first loved us.

Is there an area of your life you have been willing to serve Christ with but have struggled to fully surrender to Him?

Guided Prayer

Jesus, You gave Yourself completely for me. I want my response to Your grace to be more than isolated acts of obedience; I want my whole life to belong to You. Search my heart and show me anything I am still trying to keep outside Your loving rule. By Your Spirit, teach me to place my time, plans, relationships, resources, and future into Your hands. Let everything I give flow from the deeper joy of knowing that I am already Yours. Amen.
