He Will Complete It

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” — Philippians 1:6, ESV

Paul’s confidence in the Philippian believers was not rooted in their ability to grow perfectly. It was rooted in the faithfulness of God. The work taking place in them had been started by God, sustained by God, and would one day be completed by God. Their spiritual formation did not rest entirely on the strength of their resolve. It rested in the hands of the One who had called them into fellowship with Christ.

This is deeply comforting when growth feels slow. We often become discouraged by the parts of ourselves that still feel unfinished. We notice the habits that remain difficult to change, the fears that return, or the areas where obedience still feels costly. We may wonder whether we are making any real progress at all. Yet Philippians 1:6 reminds us that unfinished does not mean abandoned. Christ is still at work.

The good work God begins is grounded in the saving work of Jesus. Through His death and resurrection, Christ has forgiven our sin, made us new, and brought us into His life. He did not rescue us only to leave the rest of our transformation to us. By His Spirit, He continues shaping our desires, renewing our minds, and forming His character within us. Every act of repentance, every return to trust, and every small step of obedience bears witness to His grace at work.

This does not make our participation unnecessary. Paul later calls believers to continue in faithful obedience, but even that obedience flows from God working within them. We respond because Christ is already present. We persevere because His grace is sustaining us. We keep returning because He has not loosened His hold.

There will be places in our lives where the work of Christ is easier to see and others where it appears hidden beneath weakness, waiting, or struggle. His faithfulness is not measured by how clearly we can observe our progress. Jesus knows what He is forming, and He is patient with the process. The Savior who began the work will not lose interest halfway through.

Your hope is not that you will complete yourself. Your hope is Christ. He is faithful in every unfinished place, present in every slow season, and committed to bringing His work to completion. The story of your formation is still being written by hands that were pierced for you.
