Scripture Focus — 1 John 4:18 (ESV)
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”
Devotional Reflection
The day after Christmas often feels quieter. The anticipation has passed, the celebrations begin to wind down, and ordinary life starts to reemerge. It is in this quieter space that fear can creep back in—fear about what comes next, about unanswered prayers, about responsibilities waiting on the other side of the holiday.
John speaks directly into this reality. Fear, he tells us, thrives where love is misunderstood. It whispers that we are not secure, not forgiven, not safe. But Christmas proclaims a different truth: God’s love has come near, fully and decisively, in Christ. Perfect love does not shame or threaten—it reassures. It reminds us that we are held, known, and kept.
When John says that love “casts out” fear, he describes an active movement. God’s love pushes fear out by replacing it with trust. This does not mean fear never tries to return, but that it no longer gets the final word. The love revealed in Jesus steadies our hearts, quiets our anxieties, and invites us to live with confidence rooted in grace rather than uncertainty. The work of Advent continues after Christmas as we learn to remain in the love that has already been given.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
Breath Prayer
Inhale: Your love surrounds me.
Exhale: I release my fear.
How to Practice a Breath Prayer
When anxious thoughts surface today, pause and breathe slowly. Let this prayer remind you that fear loses its power in the presence of God’s perfect love.
Practical Application
Pay attention to one fear that tries to resurface today—about the future, expectations, or uncertainty. Instead of pushing it away, bring it honestly before God and ask Him to meet it with His love.
Journal Prompt
What fears tend to return once the celebration fades? How does remembering God’s perfect love reshape the way you face them?
Closing Prayer
God of perfect love, thank You for sending Your Son to free me from fear. When anxiety rises, help me rest in Your love and trust that I am safe in Your care. Teach me to live with confidence rooted in Your grace. Amen.
Invitation to train for godliness, run with aim, and finish the race.
Love strengthens courage. Carry the assurance of God’s perfect love with you today, trusting it to steady you as you continue the race ahead.
