Psalm 85
“Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?” — Psalm 85:6 (ESV)
Devotional
Psalm 85 is a prayer from people who remember the mercy of God and long to know it again. The psalm begins by recalling what the Lord has already done—He showed favor, restored His people, forgave iniquity, and covered sin. Memory matters here. The prayer for renewal is rooted in the character and past faithfulness of God. They ask for revival because they know the kind of God He has shown Himself to be.
Then the psalm turns into petition: “Restore us again.” The people are not asking merely for relief or improved circumstances. They are asking for God to renew what has grown weak and to bring them again into the joy of His presence. “Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?” That line is especially beautiful because it shows the true aim of revival. It is not excitement for its own sake. It is restored delight in God Himself.
The psalm then leans forward in hope: “Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people.” Peace is not something the people manufacture. It is what God speaks. He is the one who brings near what is fractured, settles what is restless, and restores what is broken. His salvation is near, and His glory dwells with His people.
And then comes one of the most beautiful images in all of Scripture: “Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other.” This finds its fullness in Christ. In Jesus, the mercy of God does not cancel His righteousness, and His righteousness does not exclude His peace. At the cross, steadfast love and truth meet perfectly. Christ bears sin, upholds righteousness, and brings peace to those who were far off. He is the answer to the psalm’s longing for restoration.
So Psalm 85 teaches us to ask boldly for renewal while fixing our hope on the God who has already drawn near in His Son. Real revival begins with God, leads back to God, and ends in rejoicing in God. Christ is the peace He speaks, the mercy He gives, and the glory dwelling among His people. Where He is, true renewal begins.
