Scripture Focus:
Luke 22:19 (ESV)
“And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, which is given for you.’”
What He Gives Before He Goes
On the night before the cross, Jesus does not withdraw. He gathers. He shares a meal. He gives Himself.
In the Upper Room, everything slows. The urgency of what is coming does not lead Jesus to distance Himself from His disciples — it leads Him closer. He takes bread, breaks it, and offers it with clarity: “This is my body, given for you.” What is about to happen on the cross is not accidental. It is intentional. It is given.
This moment reveals something essential about the heart of Christ. He does not wait until after the cross to show His love. He expresses it fully beforehand. Even with betrayal already in motion, even with denial just ahead, He gives Himself freely. His love is not cautious. It is complete.
John 13:34 captures the command that flows from this moment: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you.” The standard is no longer comfort or convenience — it is Christ Himself. Love becomes defined by self-giving, by presence, by staying when it would be easier to pull away.
The cross is near, but so is His love.
And before He suffers, He gives.
Practice
Take a few quiet moments to reflect on the words: “given for you.”
Let them become personal.
Pray:
“Jesus, help me receive what You have given, and shape my life by that same love.”
Reflection Question
What would it look like for me to love others in the same way Christ has loved me?
