"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" – 1 John 3:1
Devotional Reflection
God’s love is not measured in small portions or given reluctantly—it is lavish, abundant, and freely poured out. In 1 John 3:1, we are invited to see this love, to truly recognize its greatness. It is a love so profound that it transforms our identity—we are not just loved from a distance; we are called children of God.
The word lavished conveys extravagance, an overflowing abundance that exceeds expectations. God doesn’t ration His love or give it based on our worthiness. He pours it out freely, making us His own. This truth is both a comfort and a calling. To be loved by God means we belong to Him, and belonging to Him changes everything.
As you reflect today, let the reality of God’s lavish love reshape how you see yourself—not as someone striving for love, but as someone already chosen and cherished by the Father.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
Breath Prayer: (Inhale) See what great love…(Exhale) The Father has lavished on us.
How to Practice a Breath Prayer: Find a quiet space where you can sit comfortably and take a few deep breaths to settle your mind. As you inhale, silently pray the first part of the phrase (e.g., “See what great love…”), and as you exhale, pray the second part (e.g., “…the Father has lavished on us.”). Repeat the prayer slowly for 2–5 minutes, allowing it to center your heart in the truth of God’s love. Let this practice be a moment of stillness where you simply receive His love without striving.
Practical Application
Receive God’s Love: Set aside a few minutes today to rest in the truth that you are fully known and fully loved by God. Meditate on 1 John 3:1 and let its truth settle deeply in your heart.
Affirm Your Identity: Write down three ways your life is different because you are a child of God. How does this truth shape your confidence, your decisions, and your relationships?
Extend Love Freely: Just as God lavishes His love on us, look for a way to share love abundantly today—through encouragement, generosity, or an act of kindness that reflects His heart.
Journal Prompt
How does knowing that you are lavished in God’s love change the way you see yourself and others? Write about how this truth challenges or encourages you in your daily life.
Closing Prayer
Father, Your love is beyond measure, freely given and overflowing. Thank You for calling me Your child and lavishing me with grace. Help me to live in the confidence of Your love, not striving to earn what has already been given. Let my life reflect the depth of Your love to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Invitation to Live with Truth, Goodness, and Beauty
