Scripture Focus
“And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ And Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant hears.’” – 1 Samuel 3:10 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
In Samuel’s day, “the word of the Lord was rare” (1 Samuel 3:1). God’s voice had been quiet for a long time, and the spiritual climate of Israel was dim. Yet in the stillness of night, God called a young boy by name.
Seasons of silence can make us wonder if God has forgotten us—or worse, turned away. Loss and disappointment can convince us not to expect His voice at all. But silence is not absence. Sometimes God uses quiet seasons to prepare us to hear Him clearly when He speaks again.
Samuel’s posture—“Speak, for your servant hears”—is a model for us. Trust grows when we stay ready to respond, even after long waiting. God’s faithfulness is not measured by how often He speaks, but by the truth that when He does, His words bring life.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
God is still present, even in the quiet.
Breath Prayer:
Inhale: “Speak, Lord…”
Exhale: “…I am listening.”
Practical Application
Set aside time today to sit in stillness before God—no music, no distractions. Simply tell Him you’re listening and invite Him to speak as He wills.
Journal Prompt
How have I responded to seasons when God seemed silent? What might it look like to posture my heart like Samuel’s?
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You that You have not forgotten me. Even when I cannot hear You, help me to trust that You are near. Give me a listening heart, ready to receive Your word whenever and however You choose to speak. Amen.
Invitation to Live with Truth, Goodness, and Beauty
Silence is not the end of the story. God’s voice still comes, and when it does, it brings light to the waiting heart.
