Scripture Focus
“David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him. And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul, gathered to him. And he became commander over them. And there were with him about four hundred men.” – 1 Samuel 22:1–2 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
David, once celebrated for his victory over Goliath, now hid in a cave—exiled, hunted, and uncertain of his future. The cave of Adullam became a place of refuge, not only for David, but for others who were hurting and broken. Out of his loss and fear, God began gathering a community that would one day become the core of his kingdom.
Sometimes trust leads us into caves. These are the seasons of hiding, waiting, or feeling pressed down by disappointment. Yet caves can become holy places—where God shelters us, shapes us, and surrounds us with companions who share our need for His mercy.
God’s goodness doesn’t abandon us to the cave. He meets us there, reminding us that His presence and His people can turn even the darkest hiding place into a space of refuge and hope.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
God meets me in the cave and turns it into refuge.
Breath Prayer:
Inhale: “You are my shelter…”
Exhale: “…I will trust Your care.”
Practical Application
If you feel like you’re in a “cave season,” name it before God today. Then look for ways He may be providing support—through His Word, His Spirit, or the people He’s placed in your life.
Journal Prompt
What “cave” has God allowed me to enter, and how has He met me there? Who has He brought alongside me in seasons of hiding or weakness?
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You that You are my refuge in every season. Teach me to trust You in the caves of life, and help me see how even these places are held in Your faithful care. Amen.
Invitation to Train for Godliness, Run with Aim, and Finish the Race
The caves of life are not wasted. Train your heart to trust God in hidden places, run with courage even in waiting, and finish the race knowing He is your shelter and strength.
