Draw Near with Confidence

Scripture

“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” — Hebrews 4:16, ESV

Devotional

Hebrews gives weary believers a breathtaking invitation: draw near. Not shrink back, not clean yourself up first, not try to become less needy before coming to God. Draw near. The reason is not found in our strength or consistency, but in Jesus Christ, our great high priest. He has passed through the heavens, He stands before the Father for us, and He holds us fast. Because of Him, the throne of God is not closed to His people. In Christ, it is a throne of grace.

This passage is especially tender because it tells us that Jesus is not distant from our weakness. He is exalted, yet He is not untouched. He knows what it is to live in a fallen world, to suffer, to be pressed, and to endure temptation, yet without sin. His sympathy is not mere sentiment. It is the holy compassion of the Son of God who entered our condition and remained faithful where we have failed. This means we do not come to someone who misunderstands us. We come to One who knows fully and loves faithfully.

That changes the way we approach God. So often we hesitate when we are most in need. We feel our weakness and assume we should stay back. We feel temptation and think we should wait until we are stronger. We feel shame and imagine that distance is safer. But Hebrews turns us another way. Because Christ has made a way for us through His finished work, the place of divine majesty has become for believers the place of mercy. We draw near not to earn grace, but to receive it. We come not because we are sufficient, but because Christ is.

There is real help here for today. Not abstract help for some distant future, but grace for the present moment. Mercy for sin. Grace for weakness. Help in time of need. Jesus does not merely open the door and send us on our way. He remains our priest, our advocate, and our confidence before God. So whatever need presses on your heart today, you do not have to stand at a distance. In Christ, you are welcomed to come near, and you will not find Him unwilling.
