“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide.”
— John 15:16 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
There is something deeply settling about knowing that God’s choice came first. Before our yes, before our obedience, before our understanding—there was His initiative. Jesus speaks these words to His disciples on the eve of His suffering, grounding their future not in their loyalty but in His choosing.
We often imagine calling as something we must discover, earn, or respond to correctly. But Jesus reframes it entirely. Calling begins not with our decision, but with His. You did not choose me. That sentence dismantles the quiet pressure to prove ourselves worthy of being included. God’s choice is not reactive. It is intentional, gracious, and secure.
To be chosen by God is not about exclusivity or privilege; it is about purpose rooted in love. Jesus chooses His disciples so that their lives would bear fruit—fruit that lasts, fruit shaped by abiding rather than striving. Their fruitfulness is not sustained by effort alone, but by remaining connected to the One who called them.
So often, we hesitate to trust our calling because we are afraid of getting it wrong. But Scripture reminds us that the same God who chose us also appoints us. He is not careless with our lives. He is faithful to guide what He has already claimed.
Today, let go of the burden of initiating your own purpose. You are not trying to convince God to involve you. You are learning how to live from the reality that He already has.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
Breath Prayer:
Inhale: You chose me, Lord.
Exhale: I will abide in You.
How to Practice a Breath Prayer:
Settle into stillness. As you inhale, receive the truth of God’s choosing love. As you exhale, release the need to secure your place through effort. Remain here, breathing slowly, for several minutes.
Practical Application
Today, notice where you feel responsible to initiate outcomes or secure your worth. Practice releasing those moments back to God, trusting that the One who chose you is also faithful to lead you.
Journal Prompt
Where do I feel pressure to prove my calling instead of resting in the truth that God chose me first?
Closing Prayer
Faithful God, thank You for choosing me before I understood, before I responded, before I felt ready. Teach me to live from that security and to abide in You as You shape my life with purpose. Amen.
Invitation
As you train for godliness, remember that your race begins with grace. Run with aim today—not to earn your calling, but because you have already been chosen.
