Scripture Focus:
1 Peter 1:6–7 (ESV)
“Though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith… may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
Refined in the Hidden Places
Lent invites us into a quiet work of purification. Often this work happens in places where no one else can see — in the thoughts we wrestle with, the desires God is reshaping, and the trust He is forming within us. Peter writes that trials test the genuineness of our faith, refining it like gold. Refinement is rarely comfortable, but it is always purposeful.
Gold becomes pure through fire. The heat exposes what does not belong and allows the impurities to be removed. In a similar way, God uses hidden seasons to reveal what needs to be surrendered within us. Lent becomes a time when the Spirit gently exposes what competes with our love for Christ — not to shame us, but to refine us.
Malachi 3:3 describes the Lord as one who “will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.” This image is striking because the refiner does not rush the process. He watches carefully, allowing the fire to do its work until the metal reflects his image. God’s refining work in us is just as patient and intentional.
The hidden work of Lent prepares us for something greater. As our faith is refined, our hearts become steadier, clearer, and more responsive to God’s presence. What feels like waiting is often the very place where transformation begins.
Practice
Spend a few moments asking God to reveal anything in your heart that He may be refining during this season of Lent.
Pray:
“Lord, refine my faith. Remove what keeps me from loving You fully.”
Reflection Question
What might God be gently refining in my heart during this Lenten season?
