Carrying Calling

Scripture Focus

“When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.’ And Elisha said, ‘Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.’ And he said, ‘You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so.’ And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it and he cried, ‘My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!’ And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. And he took up the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. Then he took the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the water, saying, ‘Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?’ And when he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha went over.”

—2 Kings 2:9–14 (ESV)

Devotional Reflection

The story is dramatic: fiery chariots, a whirlwind, a prophet carried into heaven. Yet the heart of this passage is simple and quiet: the mantle falls, and Elisha must decide whether to pick it up.

Elisha’s request for a “double portion” was not greed but longing for God’s Spirit. He knew the task ahead was beyond his strength. When Elijah is gone, Elisha tears his clothes in grief, then reaches for the cloak left behind. With trembling hands, he strikes the Jordan and asks, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” The river parts. God is still faithful.

Maturity in Christ means learning to carry the mantle that God places before us—not in our own strength, but in the Spirit’s power. We inherit not cloaks and symbols, but a calling to bear witness to Christ in our generation. The Spirit who empowered Elijah and Elisha is the same Spirit given to us (Acts 1:8).

Sometimes maturity looks like grieving what is lost and then rising to continue the mission. It looks like asking hard questions—“Where is the Lord?”—and discovering He is still with us, still faithful, still parting rivers before us.

Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust

  • Inhale: “The Spirit of God is with me.”

  • Exhale: “He equips me for His calling.”

Breath Prayer

“Lord, give me courage to carry what You’ve placed before me.”

How to Practice a Breath Prayer:

As you breathe in, pray: “Give me courage…”

As you breathe out, pray: “…to carry what You’ve placed before me.”

Pray this whenever you feel inadequate for what God is calling you to.

Practical Application

  • Identify one responsibility, relationship, or ministry where you sense God calling you to step up in faith. Ask the Spirit to empower you, just as He did Elisha.

  • Reflect on Hebrews 12:1 — the “great cloud of witnesses” reminds us that we continue the race others have begun.

Journal Prompt

What has God placed before me in this season? How am I relying on the Spirit’s power rather than my own strength to carry it?

Closing Prayer

Faithful God, You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. Give me courage to embrace what You have placed before me, not in my strength but in Your Spirit. Let my life testify that You are still faithful and still at work. Amen.

Invitation

This passage invites you to finish the race by carrying forward the mantle of faith. Maturity in Christ means trusting the Spirit’s power to continue God’s work, knowing He is still faithful and still with us.
